Sometimes you may be in the situation where you need to know how to resize a layer in Photoshop.
This is something very important you need to know. For example, after you have most of your elements on different layers, you will need to know how to work with them. From merging the layers to resizing the layer you’re working with.
Let’s go ahead and take a look at how to resize a layer in Photoshop. For this tutorial, I downloaded some elements from FreePik.com and added them in Photoshop. As they are not vectors, I used the Object Selection tool and create layers with each of them.
Now, I want to create a beautiful image using them, so for that, I will need to copy and resize the layers so all the elements fit as I want them to.
1. Open The “Layers” Panel
Normally, the “Layers” panel is going to be visible on the right side of the screen. Right now, I have a total of four layers and three of them need to be adjusted so I can finish my project.
2. Activate The “Free Transform” Tool
With the layer selected, you should go to “Edit” and then activate the “Free Transform.” You will see a checkmark next to it and will know it’s activated. After this, you’re free to move your layer around and resize it. If you have many layers to copy, move and resize, as I do for this project, you can simply press “Ctrl-T” and make the process much faster.
3. Resize The Layer
You can now simply drag and drop the corners in order to resize the layers. If you also press the “Shift” key, you will be able to change the layer’s height and width. Right now, I’m interested in keeping the original image ratio, so I’ll just resize them.
4. Apply The Settings
After you edit the layer, you will have to confirm the action. You can either do it by clicking the checkmark at the top of the screen or pressing enter. If you press “escape” for example, the changes will revert and you will have to do everything again.
Right now, I have many layers in here, as I needed many elements. I’m gonna go ahead and merge them together so I’m left with a total of four layers and easily work with them.
When you’re done editing, just save your project and you’re done. A little trick you may use, is whenever you resize the layer, you can hold down the “Alt” key and resize the layer from the center, instead of the point you’re dragging. This is very useful if you want to maintain its position while resizing it.
Happily, now you know how to resize a layer in Photoshop, and you can go ahead and think of a lot of cool ideas you could play with. This will definitely be a game-changer for any project you may have!
