If you’re running an online store and you need to sell digital products, then you may be a little conflicted about the app you should use. Of course, not everything you find is reliable or secure, and this is where we come in! Let’s take a look at the best 4 digital download apps for Shopify, so you can choose reliability for your store!
1. Downloadable Digital Assets
Downloadable Digital Assets is the most popular and most complete app in Shopify’s app store. It sends the digital items from your store’s email address directly to your customers, and it also has a powerful fraud-protection system that will stop the fulfilment of high or medium risk orders which is the only digital downloads app capable of this.
Other features include download links in customers’ accounts, via email, and on the Thank You page. Also the ability to import all previous orders before using the app so you can still send download links to all your customers.
This app works on four different plans, and the smallest one is free. You get 5GB of storage, one attachment per product, unlimited products. However, if you decide to upgrade to the biggest plan, which is only $20/month, you get up to 30GB of storage and a limit of 450 orders per day.
It’s built by a team of experienced Shopify developers called Massive Monkey Applications.
- Send download emails from own email address
- Unique features
- Very quick setup
- Super easy-to-use interface
- No file size limit within your plan
- None found
2. Digital Downloads
Digital Downloads is developed by Shopify. It’s super easy to use, and also free. However, there are many limitations that come with it. It doesn’t have any extra features, and you can’t send files larger than 5GB.
Even though this app is a little limited, it’s free to use by anyone who needs it, and that’s a huge pro!
- Basic Intuitive interface
- Created by Shopify
- No upgrade options
- No extra features
- Limited to 5GB Max
3. Single music
Single music is considered to be the best digital download app if you’re selling music online. It offers you the possibility of adding audio previews, lossless and MP3 tracks, and your songs can be bundled with physical products.
Single music comes with three plans, and it includes a free one. However, it’s not 100% free. For every song, you pay 15¢, and there’s a cap at $2/album. You don’t need to pay this fee in the paid plans, and you also get daily analysis and conversion analytics.
- Free plan available
- Good for music
- Audio previews
- Not the most intuitive interface
4. Send Owl
Send Owl has been around for some time now, and even though it’s popular, it doesn’t mean that it’s the best out there. It sends the products to the customers via expiring links, and each plan is limited to a number of products which can be frustrating if you have a good amount of them.
Send owl doesn’t have any free plans, so you can’t really test the app before purchasing a subscription. The smallest plan includes 1GB of storage and up to 10 products, while the biggest one goes up to 250 products and 15 GB of storage.
- Basic interfaceGood for music
- Usable on many platforms other than Shopify
- Very limited storage space
- Limited features
- Complicated setup
My personal recommendation for digital download apps for Shopify is clearly Downloadable Digital Assets. It’s the best, there’s no doubt about that, and you’ll be able to start selling your digital products in no time.
